Household Insecticides
Insecticides are primarily categorized into two main groups based on their mode of action and duration of effectiveness: systemic insecticides and contact insecticides.
Systemic Insecticides are designed to be absorbed by plants or animals and distributed throughout their tissues. Once absorbed, these insecticides provide extended protection by targeting pests that feed on the treated plant or animal. They work by either poisoning the insects or disrupting their physiological processes over an extended period. Because they remain active within the plant or animal for a prolonged duration, systemic insecticides are often referred to as having residual or long-term activity. This makes them effective against pests that might come into contact with the plant or animal over time.
Contact Insecticides, on the other hand, are applied directly to the surface where pests are expected to come into contact with them. These insecticides act quickly upon direct exposure, killing insects that are on or near the treated area. However, they do not persist in the environment or on the plant for an extended period. Once they are washed away, degraded, or evaporate, their effectiveness diminishes rapidly, leaving no residual activity. As a result, contact insecticides must be reapplied more frequently to maintain pest control.
